University of Minnesota Student Cultural Centers
Working with a broad stakeholder group including University administrators and student leaders of cultural centers, this project transformed 18,000 square feet within the University’s 1930s-era Coffman Memorial Union to reflect and support the diverse cultures represented within the space, to ensure flexibility in space configuration, to provide the right setting for various meeting types, and encourage communication and interactions among cultural groups. In addition to serving the needs of the nine Cultural Centers, the project includes a new multi-use space for student groups that do not have dedicated meeting space. The design is customized for a broad range of uses including study, lounge, collaborative work and learning, meeting spaces, and a ‘front porch’ for each Cultural Center to welcome new and current members.
